Currently there are three main treatments bliilaave for Graves' Disease.Firstly, drug therapy with anti-thyroid drugs such as methimazole, or carbimazole (depending which country you are in). These reduce the amount of thyroid hormaone being produced. If drug treatment is not effective then there are two forms of ablation surgery, or more commonly radiation (which I think you were refering to).Radiation is given in the form of a small pill which contains a tiny amount of radioactive iodine. Any iodine in the body accumulates in the thyroid gland and so there is no risk of radiation in any other part of the body and the dose is very small. It takes some time to work (up to several months) but the radiation ablates the thyroid, reducing the high levels of thyroid hormone found in Graves'.Surgical techniques involve the removal of part of the thyroid gland, although this is usually the last treatment offered.I'm sure that his physician will be able to answer any questions about the procedure.I hope it all goes well!

Very interesting, a friend passed this book onto me last week andI have just started to read it. I think if we all had the discipline to eat in moderation there would be no need for diets ! Would love to know how it goes Catherine

Interesting article!
I'm a Sydney-based French blogger, promoting healthy eating, fitness and exercise based on the principles of the French Paradox.
My blog Mademoiselle Slimalicious is NOT a dieting blog. It focuses instead on eating for pleasure, with moderation and balance, making healthy food choices and maintaining a level of fitness by being naturally active.

I actually did interview Mireille Guiliano (author of French Women Don't Get Fat) on my blog, you may want to have a look at it.

I had my thyroid out 14 years ago. I always used to be cold, but now that I take replacement hormones, I am actually more or less normal. Lol, I used to live in Southern California, where you would think it would be impossible to ever be cold, but when I was a kid I would sit right on top of the heater vent in winter to do my homework. It was the only way I really felt warm enough....who would have guessed it was a thyroid thing?

Sara, bless your heart. I know. I have a friend who calls it "stinking thyroid thinking" when we create a mountain out of a molehill, but know that it really isn't you. Take it as a sign that you are just exhausted and need to try to sleep. One thing that does help me is to eat dinner three and a half hours before I will make myself go to bed. Then a half hour before bedtime, microwave a potato and eat mostly the skin. You can have butter and salt and pepper. Drink a nice glass of water. Get off the electronic devices. I put on Coast to Coast radio if they are telling some good stories that won't stress me, otherwise I set the computer up and put on hay House radio www.hayhouseradio.com (cover the screen with a light cloth so the room remains dark) and go to sleep listening to someone talk.

Didn't you use to always fall asleep when someone reads to you? You can even get an audio book that you like and play that. The idea is to distract your thyroid thoughts as you drift off to sleep and see if this helps you sleep better.

I closed my eyes for a minute and imagined you having a wonderful day.

A big hug to you - Catherine

I received the following email --

In response to your post about thyroid awareness month, I would like to write a little comment.
What is your opinion about gluten-free diet and selenium supplementation to lower TPO antibodies?

Have you tried any of these?

How often do you need to have thyroid exam / ultrasound?

Thank you so much!
Regards,
O.T.

----

Wow OT thanks for your email

I know a gluten-free diet helps a lot of Hashi sufferers. I take selenium, B12, C and D and my antibodies are still there.

Not to give away too much of what I will be sharing, but I also wonder if it isn't part of the T4 that causes ongoing problems for many of us.

I am not a bread or pasta eater, but I do "cheat" about once a month and my reaction depends on how much. My grandmother had Celiac disease...

My endo has never felt it necessary to do an ultrasound.

I hope this helps.
